    Description

    DETAILS:
Original pinback button issued by the
    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
    (
    SNCC
) under the leadership of Martin Luther King. Circa 1960. This button was among the very first pinbacks issued by SNCC to their members at demonstrations during the Black Civil Rights Movement. The unambiguous design was intended to identify the members and emphasize their non-violent intentions. Measures 2 1/4 inches.
    The
    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
    (
    SNCC
) was the principal student led organization during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Emerging in 1960 from the student initiated sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in the Southern US, the Committee sought to coordinate and organize African Americans in their battles to end segregation and attain a more equal society for all black Americans. The group was led by Martin Luther King.
