DETAILS:Original pinback button issued by the Black Panther Party in response to the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968. Upon hearing news of King's assassination the Panthers quickly mobilized their forces across the United States. They organized demonstrations and uprisings to demand justice. The response by the authorities was excessive even for the standards of the racially segregated 1960s. Scores of African Americans were killed by the police simply for exercising there right to demonstrate. This button issued by the Panthers Oakland headquarters shows an African American male with his fist raised and his chains broken. Measures 1 1/2" inches. Rare.

, was a wave of civil disturbance which swept the United States following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Many believe it to be the greatest wave of social unrest the United States had experienced since the Civil War. Riots raged across the country. President Lyndon Johnson called out the National Guard and little civil disobedience was tolerated by the authorities.
